Does Kevin Feige have big plans for Mephisto? The head of Marvel Studios suggests that Sacha Baron Cohen’s villain may have a long road ahead in the MCU.
One of the most surprising reveals in the history of the MCU was the confirmation that Sacha Baron Cohen was, in fact, playing Mephisto. This not due to fans being shocked by Mephisto, Kevin Feige and the rest of the Marvel Studios team certainly telegraphed that from a mile away. The shock came from fans absolutely stunned by the casting choice, with many seeing him as a poor fit for such an iconic villain in the franchise.
Though it seems as if Sacha Baron Cohen is here to stay. When speaking about the current state of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige teased that there are big plans in store for Mephisto. In turn, it seems as though Cohen may be sticking around the MCU just a big longer than some of his detractors may have hoped when he first appeared in Ironheart.
“[Mephisto’s] another character that, pre-MCU, would have been hard to do,” Feige remarked to Games Radar. “He’s a devil. How do you do that character? But he’s a formative character. He was a big part of Thanos’ storyline in the comics. So again, now that he’s here, the potential is clear. Yes, [he will return].”
Was Mephisto Ever In Wandavision?
Infamously, the entire Marvel fanbase went bonkers during the course of Wandavision‘s initial run. The internet was rampant with speculation that Mephisto was going to appear in the series, with some still believing that Sacha Baron Cohen was initially cast for the project before being pushed to Ironheart. However, it seems as though speculation may have actually fueled the character’s potential to debut in the MCU.
“He was never part of WandaVision. We’ve talked about that. Matt’s talked about that. Jack Schaefer’s talk about that. He was never part of WandaVision,” Feige clarified “But the enthusiasm with which he was theorised on that was certainly cool and fun to watch.”
With Mephisto’s role seemingly being constructed after the debut of Wandavision, it’ll be interesting to see what the future holds for Sacha Baron Cohen’s take on the character. The MCU has become absolutely packed in recent years, raising questions on what the future might hold for the devil himself. Though, given Spider-Man has a new trilogy on the horizon, fans are already crossing their fingers about what they hope WON’T happen!
