Bryan Cranston Wants To Play Marvel Villain Mister Sinister

Marvel Mister Sinister X-Men Bryan Cranston

Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston recently discussed the idea of playing a supervillain and revealed that he’d be down to play the role of Mister Sinister for Marvel if given the chance.

Bryan Cranston is one of those likable, versatile actors whose range gives him the potential to play a number of different types of characters. He’s been a fan-favorite to play DC villain Lex Luthor for years, as well as the role of Gotham PD Commissioner James Gordon, a role which Cranston provided his voice for in the 2011 animated film Batman: Year One.

Now that X-Men is back at Marvel, after the recent purchase of 20th Century Fox by Disney, fans have been revealing who they’d like to see play the iconic mutants in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Bryan Cranston has been one name thrown around as a perfect choice for either Charles Xavier or Magneto but there’s a specific X-Men foe that Cranston would like to play. During a recent interview with, Cranston revealed that he’d be up for taking on the role of Nathan Essex, a.k.a. Mister Sinister. He first began by simply describing the type of villain he’d like to play.

“I want to play an antagonist a fraction smarter than the protagonist, never dumbed down to give the hero an easy win. That’s frustrating and boring to watch.”

After the idea of Cranston playing Mister Sinister came up, the actor revealed that he’s aware of the character and would love to play the him.

“Okay don’t talk about my personal life. (laughs) Actually, that was the character, I’ll admit. Mister Sinister was the character I was thinking about. “

Essex Corp was a major part of the plot for Logan, though Essex never made an appearance himself. Cranston went on to elaborate on what it is that attracts him to the role.

“I guess it’s a selfish standpoint. I don’t want to do a character that has been done several times before. I don’t to be compared like ‘well, his Commissioner Gordon was yada yada yada’. I don’t want that. I want to take something that hasn’t been done.”
