Five years after receiving Captain America’s shield at the end of 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, Marvel fans are finally going to get the chance to witness Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson take on the mantle of Captain America in full force.
Captain America: Brave New World, scheduled for release next year, will officially mark Wilson’s debut as the new star-spangled hero, following Chris Evans’ departure as Steve Rogers. In the meantime, check out the new image, courtesy of Empire magazine, of Wilson’s upgraded Captain America suit.
Director Julius Onah promises an exciting and challenging journey for Wilson in this new chapter. “It’s really his coming-out show,” Onah said in the Empire interview. “It’s about putting him through the paces.”
The film is expected to delve into the complexities of Wilson’s current position as Captain America, exploring his relationship with the American government, the public, and the ever-present threat of supervillains in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Onah teased that Wilson’s decision-making process might clash with the President Ross’ views at times, and based on the recent footage at CinemaCon, it looks like Wilson and Ross will clash quite a lot.
Additionally, the movie will reintroduce Tim Blake Nelson’s Samuel Sterns, also known as The Leader, who was last seen in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk. Onah hinted at the challenges Wilson will face, adding, “Sam finds himself almost standing between Samuel Sterns and what he thinks the government owes him, and how he wants to go about getting that.”
Unlike his predecessor, Steve Rogers, Wilson does not possess the super-soldier serum, making his journey as Captain America even more daunting. Onah acknowledged this, stating, “The action in this movie is incredibly exciting because this is a guy who can break, this is a guy who can bleed. We get to have a lot of fun pushing him to the limit.”
Captain America: Brave New World is currently slated to hit theaters on February 14, 2025.
