Marvel Producer On How ‘Spider-Man: Freshman Year’ Fits Into The MCU

It was something we all had already assumed.

Marvel producer Brad Winderbaum opens up on how Spider-Man: Freshman Year fits into the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In late 2021 it was revealed that a new Spider-Man animated series, titled Spider-Man: Freshman Year was in development for Disney Plus. Details on just what exactly the series would be about have been a bit vague but originally was said to take place in the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe, acting as something of a prequel to the Tom Holland films. Reveals at San Diego Comic-Con, however, make this rather unlikely.

During the Marvel Animation panel, a few new things were revealed about Spider-Man: Freshman Year. Specifically, Norman Osborne would be taking on some kind of mentor role for Peter Parker as well as a number of other reveals that seem to contradict what we saw in the Spider-Man films. Now Marvel producer Brad Winderbaum has shed some light on the matter.

Brad Winderbaum currently serves as the Head of Streaming for the franchise but has had executive producer roles in several projects such as What If…? and Thor: Love And Thunder. While speaking to Comicbook.com, Winderbaum discussed Spider-Man: Freshman Year and seemed to suggest that it was some kind of alternate universe, similar to what we saw in What If…?:

“Well, like we said, in the panel, it follows the pattern that you see in [Captain America:] Civil War. Down to Peter getting the broken Blu-ray player from the trash and he walks into his department for the famous moment where Tony stark is waiting for him to offer him the stark internship and take him to Berlin. But because of things that happen in the multiverse because of new, random occurrences, it’s not Tony Stark who’s waiting for him there. It’s Norman Osborn and that sends his life in an unexpected trajectory that collides him with many unexpected characters in the Marvel universe.”

Here’s the synopsis for the latest live-action film, Spider-Man: No Way Home:

“For the first time in the cinematic history of Spider-Man, our friendly neighborhood hero is umasked and no longer able to separate his normal life from the high-stakes of being a Super Hero. When he asks for help from Doctor Strange the stakes become even more dangerous, forcing him to discover what it truly means to be Spider-Man.”

Directed by Jon Watts from a script written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, No Way Home stars Tom Holland, Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Tony Revolori, Martin Starr, J.B. Smoove, Marisa Tomei, Jon Favreau, Benedict Wong, Benedict Cumberbatch, Alfred Molina, Willem Dafoe, and Jamie Foxx.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is available on every home media format. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the future of the franchise and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
