How long will Doctor Doom wear his iconic mask? A rumor suggests a shocking timeline for when the villain’s face reveal will happen in Avengers: Doomsday.
it’s clear that one of the cornerstones of the story for Avengers: Doomsday is Robert Downey Jr. taking on the role of Doctor Doom. After all, with how big his salary is reported to be, it’s certain that the reveal of his true face will be a big moment….right? Which is why it’s been so odd that the rumor mill has been all-but-silent when it comes to how characters will react to seeing Tony Stark’s face on a brand new body.
That may be for a good reason. A new rumor from John Campea, a journalist with a very strong history of having insider information, suggests that Doctor Doom’s face reveal won’t even happen in Avengers: Doomsday. Rather, they’re saving Robert Downey Jr.’s big money shot for Secret Wars due to undisclosed plot reasons.
“One of the rumors about Doomsday that we did confirm for people is that they do not reveal Robert Downey Jr.’s face as Doctor Doom. [I] want to make sure I’m careful about what I say after that.”
“Just generally speaking, they don’t reveal Tony Stark’s face or Robert Downey Jr.’s face in Doomsday, and that the repercussions of that and the reasons for that and all that kind of stuff is something they’re saving for Secret Wars.”
Doctor Doom’s True Face In Avengers: Doomsday
This rumor is odd for a few reasons. While there is an argument to be made that Doctor Doom rarely shows his face in the comics, so it’s best to save the reveal for a climactic moment, it’s worth reiterating that they paid Robert Downey Jr. quite a bit of scratch to appear in this project. While people locked in to the scene will know this regardless, not showing his face at all in the movie could leave some general audiences disappointed and confused.
Then again, there is an upside to this rumor. That being that it does seem there is an ACTUAL textual reason to have cast Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, despite how much fans have dismayed at the context. And while that reason likely won’t be evident in Avengers: Doomsday, keeping a mystery open-ended into Secret Wars could help ensure audiences tune in.
Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit theaters in December 2026. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe!
