During Marvel Studios’ animation panel at San Diego Comic-Con, What If…? director Bryan Andrews confirmed the fate of Hayley Atwell’s Captain Carter following Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Captain Carter was originally introduced in a What If…? episode that saw Hayley Atwell’s Peggy Carter receive the Super Soldier Serum instead of Steve Rogers. She then made her live-action debut in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, where she was killed by the Scarlet Witch.

Many Marvel fans have been wondering whether the Captain Carter of Earth-838, who died in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, was the same version of the character introduced in What If…?. Now, they have an answer.

After Loki introduced the Multiverse to the MCU, both What If…? and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness started to explore alternate versions of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

While the Captain Carter introduced in What If…? bears many striking similarities to the version of the character seen in the Doctor Strange sequel, director Bryan Andrews confirmed the two are not the same character during the Marvel Studios Animation panel at San Diego Comic-Con.

Speaking about What If…? and Captain Carter’s appearance in Doctor Strange, Andrews said it was “pretty awesome” to see her in live action, but quickly clarified that was a different version of the character:

“I think it’s important to point out, that’s not our Captain Carter. That’s some variant version.”

Weighing in on the differences between the Captain Carters, What If…? executive producer Brad Winderbaum expressed a little more faith in the animated series’ version of Peggy, saying “Our Captain Carter wouldn’t have gone down like that.”

This distinction obviously opens the door to What If…? Season 1’s Captain Carter returning in the series’ upcoming second season – and during Marvel Studios’ animation panel, her second season return was confirmed. If she makes it out of Season 2 alive, she might even be back for the recently announced Season 3 as well.
