Marvel & Star Wars Brands ‘Damaged’ By Disney Plus, According To New Report

Disney Plus isn't looking too good!

Was Disney Plus an absolute failure? The latest report reveals that both Marvel Studios and Star Wars have suffered due to the streaming wars.

It’s hard to remember that there was a time where Disney Plus seemed like a true bastion for the blockbuster. The Mandalorian brought the Star Wars brand back from the dead with so many fans. And, following the end of Marvel Studios’ Infinity Saga, the platform promised a chance for the lesser-known heroes to get a chance to shine.

However, that dream of a unified brand under Disney Plus was always a pipe dream, and the cracks in the system are starting to show. The Wrap recently published a report analyzing how the streaming service ultimately resulted in Disney’s biggest brands like Marvel Studios and Star Wars being sacrificed on the altar in the name of “more content”.

“Given the quality of the Marvel Disney+ output has been incredibly mediocre, it’s dragged the entire brand down and diluted its creative. People don’t care now,” One executive remarked to the outlet, with another following up “When you went to a Star Wars movie, it used to be special. But there’s a difference between let’s have a movie every four years versus let’s have three shows on the air all the time and have a movie every year.”

The Uncertain Future Of Disney Plus

The stewards of Marvel Studios and Star Wars have already vocally stated their intent to curtail content and focus back on big screen events. However, for as much as that may help their brands, it may hurt Disney Plus even more. The Wrap remarks that the service already lost 700,000 subscribers in the first quarter of this year. Without their marquee shows, that number will likely continue to drop, and fast.

It’s very possible that, in the wake of Marvel Studios and Star Wars trimming back their content for the service, Disney Plus goes the way of the dodo. After all, it’s much more profitable for all parties involved if Disney simply licensed their properties to other services, even if the actual shows put out were filmed in-house.
