Avengers: Endgame co-writer Christopher Markus confirmed Marvel Studios considered passing the Captain America mantle to Bucky Barnes.

Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame concluded with Captain America traveling to the past to return the Infinity Stones and ultimately deciding to remain there to live his life with Peggy Carter. However, an elderly Captain America would eventually return to the present to pass on his mantle to Sam Wilson.

Of course, fans who believe Bucky should have been given the shield have wondered if this alternative outcome was even considered and co-writer Christopher Markus shed some light on the matter during an Avengers: Endgame Quarantine Watch Party hosted by ComicBook.com. As Markus explained, Marvel Studios considered passing the Captain America mantle to Bucky, but that idea was quickly dropped because Sam best embodies what the First Avengers represents.

The Captain America story continues when Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes return in Marvel Studios’ The Falcon and The Winter Soldier:

Following the events of “Avengers: Endgame,” Sam Wilson/Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) team up in a global adventure that tests their abilities—and their patience—in Marvel Studios’ “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.”

Directed by Kari Skogland from scripts written by showrunner Malcolm Spellman and Derek Kolstad, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier stars Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson / Falcon, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes / The Winter Soldier, Emily VanCamp as Sharon Carter, Daniel Brühl as Baron Helmut Zemo, and Wyatt Russell as John Walker / U.S. Agent. Actors Desmond Chiam, Miki Ishikawa, Noah Mills, and Carl Lumbly have also been cast.

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier is scheduled to premiere exclusively on Disney Plus in August 2020.
