Matt Reeves has liked his upcoming superhero film, The Batman, to a horror movie.
When the first trailer for The Batman was released, it was fairly clear that the upcoming Matt Reeves film would be perhaps the darkest film in the franchise yet. As time has gone on even more trailers for the film have been released, as well as new stills giving us more of an idea as to what to expect from the franchise. The film has, however, drawn comparisons to David Fincher films like Seven and Zodiac and almost comes off like a horror film. Based on what the director is saying, however, this was not by accident.
While speaking to Movie Maker, Matt Reeves opened up about the world of Gotham in The Batman. Specifically, he called it, at its core, a detective story, but one that was almost a horror film:
โThis idea of a place that is corrupt, and you try to swim against the tide in order to fight against it and make a difference, is quintessential Batman. And at the center of those noir stories is almost always the detective, right? And thatโs why he is the worldโs greatest detective. And so this story is, in addition to being almost a horror movie, and a thriller, and an action movie, at its core, itโs also very much a detective story.โ
In that same interview Matt Reeves also admitted that Paul Dano’s The Riddler was very much inspired by The Zodiac Killer:
โThe premise of the movie is that the Riddler is kind of molded in an almost Zodiac Killer sort of mode, and is killing very prominent figures in Gotham, and they are the pillars of society. These are supposedly legitimate figures. It begins with the mayor, and then it escalates from there. And in the wake of the murders, he reveals the ways in which these people were not everything they said they were, and you start to realize thereโs some kind of association. And so just like Woodward and Bernstein, youโve got Gordon and Batman trying to follow the clues to try and make sense of this thing in a classic kind-of-detective story way.”
Here is the synopsis for The Batman:

When a killer targets Gothamโs elite with a series of sadistic machinations, a trail of cryptic clues sends the Worldโs Greatest Detective on an investigation into the underworld, where he encounters such characters as Selina Kyle/aka Catwoman (Zoรซ Kravitz), Oswald Cobblepot/aka the Penguin (Colin Farrell), Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), and Edward Nashton/aka the Riddler (Paul Dano). As the evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetratorโs plans becomes clear, Batman must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit, and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued Gotham City.โ
