Will there be a season 2 of The Penguin? Matt Reeves gives his thoughts on what the future holds for The Batman universe.
It’s no secret that The Penguin has been a massive success critically and viewership-wise. This has left all eyes on Matt Reeves to see if the show will come back for a season 2, or if he plans to leave it behind as The Batman universe continues to grow. When asked about if fans will ever get a follow-up to Oz Cobb’s story, Reeves admitted that there have been some discussions about the idea.
“We are, in a very preliminary way — me, Lauren, [Reeves’ producing partner] Dylan [Clark], and Colin — starting to talk about what would be the way,” Reeves explained to Entertainment Weekly. “For me, what’s really important is that we earn it. The idea of revisiting means that we have to keep that same bar. I know that none of us wants to go back and just do more. We want to go back and do something great.”
“We’re leaving Oz and [Gotham] in a state where the city is still trying to heal itself from what happened. It’s also a time, as you see [with] what goes on with Vic and Crown Point, where the city’s deeply wounded. As we’re entering the movie, all of that stuff is still broiling. The repercussions of what happened as a result of the last movie and what’s happened during this gang war are very much the table setter for the way we enter into [The Batman Part II].”
In a world where sequels upon sequels get greenlit before the initial outing even proves to be a success, it’s good to hear that Matt Reeves is tempering expectations when it comes to a potential season 2 of The Penguin. It’s clear he’s putting a great deal of love into building The Batman universe, even if it means cutting a cameo that many fans would have lost their minds over.
Batman’s Cut Cameo In The Penguin
The only complaint that some fans have with The Penguin is that, even in spite of all the insanity taking place in Gotham, at no point does Batman himself ever show up. However, Matt Reeves admits that there were early plans for Robert Pattinson to make a cameo in the show. Yet just like the possibility of a season 2, he didn’t want to do it if it wasn’t earned.
“Over the course of writing the season, we discussed many times whether or not there might be some cross-through that would feel earned. We tried a few different ideas conceptually, nothing that was ever written ultimately, but nothing seemed to quite gel in a way that felt earned.”
Given how grounded The Penguin was, it does make some sense not to have an emo billionaire in a leather suit come to beat down mobsters. Even though fans know Matt Reeves was right to pull the plug on the cameo, there’s likely a part in all fans who wished to have seen Batman at least speak to Oz Cobb in less-than-life-threatening circumstances. Though with a potential season 2 on the horizon, the dream may not be dead yet!
