John Constantine star Matt Ryan explains he’d love to play the magician in HBO’s Justice League Dark series.

Fans will obviously remember Matt Ryan’s short-lived solo Constantine series before moving onto Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow. The star even voiced the magician in the animated movies Justice League Dark and its sequel, Apokolips War. In a recent interview with Den of Geek discussing the animated sequel, the star revealed that he’d like to return to the role for a movie, pointing out Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker as inspiration.

“I love the darker elements of John. There’s something about the Joker movie that really kind of connected to me in the way of like, ‘Shit, they need to do–I would love to do–a John Constantine movie like that!’ Listen, I’ve had sleepless nights about it, honestly. God, I’ve written treatments!”

Matt Ryan went on to explain that at heart he’s a theater actor and he just wants his chance to prove what he could do with the material. The Legends of Tomorrow star explained he’d be very disappointed if the project went ahead without him. Although the Den of Geek piece also explained he wasn’t aware of HBO’s Justice League Dark before the interview.

“I’m a theater actor, you know? That’s where I spent most of my life. I always say to them, ‘Just get me in the room.’ And then if they don’t want me for the role that’s their choice. But I would be very disappointed if a project like that went ahead without even sitting down and seeing what I could do with the material.”
