Matthew Vaughn has been heavily rumored to direct The Authority for DC Studios. During a recent podcast appearance, the director revealed he has spoken to DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran about helming a DC Universe project.
Matthew Vaughn is best known for his over-the-top superhero projects like Kingsmen and Kick-Ass, making him the perfect candidate to helm a project in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe. Early rumors have suggested the director is involved with The Authority film. When asked, Vaughn revealed he’s met with DC Studios, but no deal has been made yet.
“DC has reached out and Gunn and Peter, we’ve been talking,” Vaughn spoke on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. “Never say never, at the moment I’m enjoying creating my own things. The franchise is in the best hands, so let’s see what happens.”
While it would be a treat to see Matthew Vaughn tackle The Authority for DC Studios, he certainly has a full plate with two confirmed Kingsmen sequels in the works. Even if he doesn’t direct that project, fans can only hope James Gunn and Peter Safran can convince him to tackle a different DC Universe film in the future.
The future of the DC Universe
James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room, and a unified storyline across film, television, animation, and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, and Blue Beetle have all been released following the announcement of the new DC Universe, with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom still slated to hit theaters in 2023. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
