Variety reports Melissa McCarthy is in early talks to portray Ursula in Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid.
Disney’s line-up of live-action retellings of their animated classic is set to include a remake of The Little Mermaid, the acclaimed film that launched the Disney Renaissance era of the late ’80s and ’90s. According to Variety, the creative team at Disney is aiming to make “contemporary and compelling casting choices” for the live-action version of The Little Mermaid and Melissa McCarthy is reportedly in early talks to join the project.
While a deal is not complete, Melissa McCarthy is in talks to portray the villainous sea witch Ursula in the new version of The Little Mermaid. As the outlet notes, the role would give Melissa McCarthy the change to sing the song “Poor Unfortunate Souls,” the sole tune sung by Ursula in the animated The Little Mermaid.
Disney’s original The Little Mermaid centered on the princess Ariel, who longed to explore the world beyond the sea. After saving Prince Eric from drowning, Ariel turns to the sea witch Ursula and trades in her voice in order to become a human for the chance to meet the man she rescued.
Disney’s The Little Mermaid remake will be directed by Rob Marshall from a script written by David Magee. Lin-Manuel Miranda and Alan Menken will write new songs for the remake to be included alongside the classic tunes the latter penned for the animated version of The Little Mermaid. In addition to his duties as a song writer, Lin-Manuel Miranda will serve as an executive producer alongside Rob Marshall, Marc Platt, and John DeLuca.
