Mike Epps The Upshaws Sony Madame Web Spider-Man Marvel Dakota Johnson

Stand-up comedian and star of The Upshaws Mike Epps has officially signed on to join the cast of Sony’s upcoming Spider-Man spinoff, Madame Web.

Sony Pictures is continuing to expand the SSU (Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, renamed from Sony Pictures’ Universe of Marvel Characters or SPUMC), which began with Tom Hardy’s Venom and recently introduced Jared Leto’s Morbius.

Following Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s upcoming Kraven the Hunter, the mysterious Madame Web is set to be the next Spider-Man character Sony brings to the big screen. Dakota Johnson is playing the spidery mystic and Mike Epps is now confirmed to be joining her in the Marvel movie.

Sony Weaves Their Web

Details of Madame Web are still scarce and it is not yet known who Mike Epps will be playing in the Sony-produced superhero movie. The project appears to be ramping up towards entering production though, with new casting announcements becoming a regular occurrence.

Also recently announced to be joining Dakota Johnson and Mike Epps in the cast are Emma Roberts, Sydney Sweeney and Tahar Rahim. In addition to Madame Web, Mike Epps has recently signed on to appear in Apple TV+’s Lady in the Lake and Amazon Prime Video’s I’m a Virgo.

In the Marvel comics on which Madame Web is based, the character is a blind clairvoyant, connected to an intricate life-support system. The character has traditionally been depicted as being much older than star Dakota Johnson, so it is possible Madame Web is an origin story. Some reports have described it as Sony’s Spider-Man-themed answer to Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange.

Here is the synopsis for the latest entry in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, Morbius:

One of Marvel’s most compelling and conflicted characters comes to the big screen as Oscar® winner Jared Leto transforms into the enigmatic antihero, Michael Morbius. Dangerously ill with a rare blood disorder, and determined to save others suffering his same fate, Dr. Morbius attempts a desperate gamble. What at first appears to be a radical success, a darkness inside him is unleashed and transforms this healer into a hunter.

Directed Daniel Espinosa from a script written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, the film stars Jared Leto as the lead anti-hero, Adria Arjona, Matt Smith, Jared Harris, and Tyrese Gibson. Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are producing the project with Lucas Foster, while Palak Patel will oversee for Sony.

Morbius is now available on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD. Stay tuned for all the latest news on Madame Web, and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content!
