Mike Flanagan Pitched Clayface Movie To New DC Studios Heads

Clayface could also appear in The Batman: Part II...

Clayface DC Comics

Mike Flanagan, the creator of popular horror series such as The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass, has reportedly pitched a feature film centered on the DC Comics villain Clayface to James Gunn and Peter Safran, the new heads of DC Studios. The movie has not been greenlit yet, but Deadline claims that the studio has not outright rejected the pitch either.

Mike Flanagan, who co-founded Intrepid Pictures with Trevor Macy, is known for his work in the horror genre, but it’s unclear what tone he would bring to a Clayface movie. In the comics, Clayface is a shape-shifting villain who can transform his body into any form he desires. He has been portrayed as both a tragic character and a formidable foe for Batman.

According to Deadline, Mike Flanagan and his Intrepid Pictures partner recently had a meeting with the heads of DC Studios, where they presented their pitch for a Clayface movie. However, it is important to note that the Clayface pitch was not intended to be part of The Batman: Part II, which is also expected to feature the character.

Following the news, Mike Flanagan took to Twitter to address the Clayface rumors. In a tweet posted on his official account, the acclaimed director made it clear that the news was “entirely speculative” and that he would inform fans if and when the project ever came to fruition.

The future of the DC Universe

James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room and a unified storyline across film, teleivsion, animation and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.

The FlashBlue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom are currently in various stages of post-production at Warner Bros. Discovery, with all four DC Universe movies slated to hit theaters in 2023. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
