Milly Alcock recently spoke on this extra layer during an interview with Beyond Noise magazine. It seems that the actress sees that Supergirl is an inspirational characters for millions across the globe. And in taking on the mantle in the DC Universe, it seems as though she has one mission in mind: to prove that not every heroine has to be perfect.
“I think young girls should walk away from the film knowing that it’s ok to be a bit bad, and messy.”
Supergirl’s Messy Side In The DC Universe
Milly Alcock brings up an interesting case when it comes to how female heroes are portrayed in both the Marvel and DC Universe. Over the past decade, the main angle has been showing that women can be “just as good” as the boys. It’s a message spanning from Captain Marvel to Wonder Woman, and even to Supergirl herself through the CW shows.
However, while that is an important message to convey to young women, having that be their ONLY representation in titles like the DC Universe can be argued as reinforcing gender roles by highlighting titular female heroines as exceptions. Milly Alcock’s Supergirl is certainly set to buck this trend, and it’ll be incredibly interesting to see how audiences react.
