Morbius writers Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless have been tapped to pen a Spider-Man spinoff centered on Madame Web.
Sony is set to follow the box office success of Venom with a slate of Spider-Man spinoffs that includes a film centered on Morbius the Living Vampire. Now, Collider reports Morbius writers Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless have been enlisted by Sony to pen the script for a film centered on Madame Web, the clairvoyant and precognitive mutant who plays a supporting role in the Spider-Man comics.
Sony executive Palak Patel will oversee the Madame Web film for the studio. The outlet speculates Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are likely candidates to serve as producers on Madame Web considering they took on the role with Spider-Man spinoffs Morbius and Venom.
Debuting in The Amazing Spider-Man #210, Madame Web was created by writer Denny O’Neil and artist John Romita Jr. The character is typically depicted as an elderly blind woman named Cassandra Webb who has a chronic disease that makes it difficult to move or breathe. Though she is connected to a life support system that resembles a spider web, Madame Web’s clairvoyant abilities have been useful in helping Spider-Man.

Directed Daniel Espinosa from a script written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, Morbius stars Jared Leto as the lead anti-hero, Adria Arjona, Matt Smith, Jared Harris, and Tyrese Gibson. Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are producing the project with Lucas Foster while Palak Patel will oversee for Sony.
Morbius will be released in theaters on July 31, 2020.
