Deadpool star Morena Baccarin reflected on her audition for the role of Maria Hill in The Avengers.
It’s hard to believe that we are approaching the 10-year anniversary of Marvel Studios’ The Avengers. The film, which marked the first time in which we saw Earth’s Mightiest Heroes assemble officially began Hollywood’s obsession with establishing shared cinematic universes while also introducing audiences to the broader possibilities of the MCU. Numerous characters were also introduced, including Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders). Interestingly enough, another Marvel actress auditioned for the role in Deadpool star Morena Baccarin.
Morena Baccarin played Deadpool’s love interest Vanessa in both films, and as a previous-collaborator with Avengers director Joss Whedon on Firefly, she was asked to audition for the role of Maria Hill. She reflected on her experience on the Happy Sad Confused podcast:
“I didn’t get it at all, I didn’t get it at all. I love that [Joss Whedon] brought me in for it. He kept telling me she was like Sigourney Weaver in Alien, that she had this kind of hard edge to her, and I was like ‘I don’t understand.’ I couldn’t see it on the page, I couldn’t do it… I tested. I was there with Cobie, we tested against each other and I was like, ‘She’s going to get this part, I can see it. He wanted me to be emotional but hold it all in and be hard, and I was like, ‘I don’t know what you’re asking me to do. I can’t do it.'”
Along with her role in the Deadpool movies, Morena Baccarin is also known amongst comic book fans as Dr. Leslie “Lee” Thompkins in the DC Comics TV series Gotham. In regards to her potential return to the Deadpool series, it remains unknown, especially given that the third film will officially take place in the MCU, and the narrative itself remains a mystery.
In regards to Maria Hill, Cobie Smulders is set to reprise her role in the upcoming Disney Plus original series, Secret Invasion. Either way, given the coming of Deadpool 3, it would be interesting if both Cobie Smulders and Morena Baccarin end up sharing the screen together given that they both tested together with the first Avengers.
Here is the synopsis for Avengers: Endgame:
The grave course of events set in motion by Thanos that wiped out half the universe and fractured the Avengers ranks compels the remaining Avengers to take one final stand in Marvel Studios’ grand conclusion to twenty-two films, “Avengers: Endgame.”
