Variety reports Chin Han and Hiroyuki Sanada have been cast as Shang Tsung and Scorpion, respectively, in the Mortal Kombat reboot.
New Line’s upcoming feature film reboot of Mortal Kombat is currently in the pre-production phase and two additional roles have now been cast for the latest adaptation of the video game. Variety reports Chin Han will portray Shang Tsung while the role of Scorpion will be played by Hiroyuki Sanada.
In the Mortal Kombat game, Shang Tsung is a powerful and evil shapeshifting warlock who has the ability to absorb the souls of those he defeats in battle. As the arch-nemesis of Liu Kang, Shang Tsung has made his goal to defeat Earth and build his Empire.
Scorpion was also introduced in the first Mortal Kombat as an anti-hero who was killed by Quan Chi. Having returned as an undead ninja, Scorpion now seeks revenge on the very man responsible for his death.
The Mortal Kombat franchise launched with the first video game in 1992 and has since expanded to include several sequels. Plot details for the new Mortal Kombat film are currently unknown, though the video games center on a roster of character from different realm who fight for supremacy.
The video game was first adapted into a Mortal Kombat feature film directed by Paul W. S. Anderson. The film earned a worldwide total of $122 million and is widely regarded as one of the better adaptations of a video game.
Written by Greg Russo, Mortal Kombat stars Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, Sisi Stringer Mileena, Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion, and Lewis Tan in an undisclosed role.
