Mulan will make it’s debut on Disney Plus as a premium video on demand rental in September.

Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the movie industry has been in a constant flux as film’s have been delayed indefinitely. Theaters are unlikely to reopen with coronavirus cases rising and fans are looking to studios to deliver content. During an earnings call, Disney CEO Bob Chapek revealed that the live-action Mulan will be released via the company’s streaming service for $29.99 on September 4th.

Mulan is still set to receive a theatrical release, beginning internationally and then in select U.S. theaters. The move opens up the door for other tentpole projects to be released in a similar manner and possibly delivers the final blow to the theatrical window. Although, Chapek states that the studio is still very committed to theatrical releases and that Mulan is a one time thing.

We’re very pleased to be able to bring Mulan to our consumer base that has been waiting for it for a long, long time, Mulan is a one-off. That said, we find it very interesting to be able to take a new offering to consumers at that $29.99 price and learn from it and see what happens not only in terms of the uptick of the number of subscribers we got on the platform, but also the number of transactions we get on that PVOD offering.
