Secret Wars is still dealing with a Multiverse of Madness! Writer Michael Waldron confirms that he’s still attached to the Avengers: Doomsday script.
With so much focus on speculation for Avengers: Doomsday, it’s hard to forget that plans for the next two Avengers movies have changed so drastically. Originally, the Russo Brothers were never involved in the duology. The first film, originally called Kang Dynasty, was set to be written by Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania scribe Jeff Loveness and directed by Shang-Chi‘s Destin Daniel Cretton. The script for Secret Wars was then to be penned by Michael Waldron, with no director attached.
For as many issues as fans currently have with the direction of Avengers: Doomsday, there is a general consensus that it and Secret Wars are much better off with the Russo Brothers in the kitchen. Yet that doesn’t mean the old scribes are completely out for the count. In a recent interview, Michael Waldron confirmed he is still involved with the script for the two films.
“I was writing the movie after that but there wasn’t a filmmaker attached yet, I was just involved in all those conversations,” Waldron told The Wrap. “When that movie went away, I was working on what would become Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars for a time, and then they brought in the Russos and Steve McFeely.”
“As those guys got in and wrapped their hands around what these movies were going to be, and [then] there was an opportunity for me to to come back in and get to know Joe and Anthony and Steve and really just help however I could. That’s what I’m trying to do is just support them.”
The Truth About Avengers: Doomsday’s Script
There are a few important things to note when it comes to Michael Waldron’s involvement with both Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars. Per WGA rules, it’s likely Marvel cannot completely sever his name from the project, even if the script has been almost entirely rewritten by Stephen McFeely and the Russo Brothers. Especially given the trio signed onto the project with a very specific goal in mind.
On the flipside, the Russo Brothers haven’t been involved with the inner workings of the MCU for half a decade prior to Avengers: Doomsday. It’s likely that Michael Waldron served as a guide to the new reality of the studio, especially when it comes to their Disney Plus offerings, and how to work those into the script for projects like Secret Wars.
