Thor: Love and Thunder welcomes Natalie Portman back to the MCU as Jane Foster and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has addressed rumors that the actress had severed her Marvel ties.
Natalie Portman first entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Jane Foster in 2011’s Thor, before reprising the role in 2013’s Thor: The Dark World. The character didn’t make it into either of the first two Avengers movies, which came out during her initial MCU tenure.
By the time of Thor: Ragnarok, Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster was written out of the MCU completely, with a line revealing she and Thor had broken up. This led to rumors of a bitter split between Portman and Marvel Studios.
Natalie Portman’s Return Was Never Off The Table
Speaking to Empire Magazine recently, Kevin Feige revealed the rumors of a rift between Natalie Portman and Marvel Studios were simply unfounded.
Natalie Portman’s reported dissatisfaction with how Jane Foster was handled in the first two Thor movies, along with the exit of director Patty Jenkins – with whom Portman had wanted to work – from The Dark World, had led to rumors that the actress had split from Marvel with no interest in returning.
In the interview with Empire, when asked about the alleged breakup between Marvel Studios and Natalie Portman, Kevin Feige revealed it “didn’t feel that way to [him],” saying “It was [his] impression that if it was an interesting role, she would be game.”
Director Taika Waititi, who previously helmed Thor: Ragnarok and returned to direct Love and Thunder, delivered that interesting role. The director revealed he hadn’t originally planned to reintroduce Jane Foster, but during the writing thought “Wouldn’t it be cool and very unexpected to bring Jane back into the storyline?”
Natalie Portman opened up on what it was about Taika Waititi’s script that excited her and convinced her to come back as Jane Foster in Thor: Love and Thunder:
“It wasn’t completely shocking that there was an idea. But it was fully exciting that she becomes The Mighty Thor. It felt like something new in the way of making this type of movie, and what exactly I was going to get to do.”
