The film will draw on the comics in a big way.

A product description for a replica of Natalie Portman’s Mighty Thor helmet from Thor: Love and Thunder appears to confirm that Jane Foster will have cancer in the film, as in the comics.

Thor: Love and Thunder sees Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster being transformed into a new iteration of Thor by the power of Mjolnir. The film draws inspiration from a recent period in Marvel comics, beginning in 2014, which saw Jane Foster turning into the thunder god after Thor Odinson was deemed unworthy.

In the comics, Jane had been diagnosed with breast cancer shortly before becoming Thor and this went on to form a major part of her story as the God of Thunder. Whenever she transformed into Thor, all toxins were purged from her body, including her chemotherapy drugs (but the cancer itself was unaffected, as it was part of her body). Consequently, her transformations into Thor were worsening her health.

It had not been confirmed whether this same plot element would be used for Natalie Portman’s version of the character in Thor: Love and Thunder. However, a product description for a replica of her Mighty Thor helmet on the Eaglemoss website appears to confirm that Jane Foster does have cancer in the new film and that this will have a significant impact on her character. The description reads:

“Suffering from cancer, astrophysicist and Thor’s ex-girlfriend, Jane Foster, visited New Asgard and her life was changed forever. Mysteriously, the broken pieces of Mjolnir, the hammer of the thunder god, transformed her into the Mighty Thor and gifted her the superpowers of Thor, to battle threats internal and external. Wielding Mjolnir herself, she had become a godly protector and a new hero was born!

“With the help of Thor, Valkyrie, and the Guardians of the Galaxy, the Mighty Thor was faced by the powerful Gorr, the God Butcher. With divine powers himself, Gorr was driven to rid the universe of gods wherever he found them. Battling cancer in her human form and Gorr in her godly form, Jane Foster was embroiled in an epic struggle with plenty of love and thunder!”

It sounds like Jane’s cancer will be what sends her to New Asgard – possibly in search of a cure, or maybe to see Thor one more time. The description also suggests Jane will be caught between her struggles with her health and mortality in her human form, while being hunted by Christian Bale’s Gorr the God Butcher in her godly form.

Here is the synopsis for Thor: Love and Thunder:

The film finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.

Directed by Taika Waititi and produced by Kevin Feige and Brad Winderbaum, the film stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, Pom Klementieff, Sean Gunn, and Russell Crowe.
