Netflix has announced that its hit series The Witcher, based on the novels by Andrzej Sapkowski, will end with its fifth season. The decision comes as the streaming service prepares for the fourth season, which has just begun production. This upcoming season sees Liam Hemsworth stepping into the role of Geralt of Rivia, taking over from Henry Cavill.
Production on The Witcher Season 4 is currently underway, with plans to shoot it back-to-back with the fifth and final season. Liam Hemsworth, who is best known for his role as Gale Hawthorne in The Hunger Games series, has been preparing intensively for his new role as Geralt. Hemsworth recently shared a glimpse of his physical preparation on social media, teasing his debut as Geralt of Rivia.
The transition from Cavill to Hemsworth comes after Cavill’s unexpected departure from the series. Despite previously expressing his commitment to a seven-year plan for The Witcher envisioned by showrunner Lauren Hissrich, Cavill left the show for reasons that have not been publicly disclosed.
How The Witcher showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich feels about the end of the series
“It is with huge pride that we begin shooting our penultimate season of The Witcher with a stellar cast, including some exciting new additions, led by Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia,” creator and showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich told Netflix. “We’re thrilled to be able to bring Andrzej Sapkowski’s books to an epic and satisfying conclusion. It wouldn’t be our show if we didn’t push our family of characters to their absolute limit — stay tuned to see how the story ends.”
The first two seasons of The Witcher are currently available to stream on Netflix. Based on the series of books by Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski and developed for television by Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, The Witcher also stars Anya Chalotra, Freya Allan, and Joey Batey.
