A New Animated ‘Wonder Woman’ Movie Might Be In The Works

2017 is so far shaping up to be the year of Wonder Woman. She’ll be appearing in her own DCEU solo film next June, followed by a reprisal of her modern role in Justice League. There’s even a biopic about the creation of her character set to release soon as well. And it looks like Warner Bros. has more plans for her beyond the live-action films.

Warner Bros. Animation has featured a New 52 take on Wonder Woman in several of their animated Justice League movies over the past few years, but the Amazonian hasn’t been featured in a solo Wonder Woman movie for quite some time. Today at New York Comic Con, however, supervising producer James Tucker teased fans about such a project likely coming in the near future, just after a preview of the upcoming animated Justice League Dark movie.

“We discussed with Warner video, and they have ‘Wonder Woman’ on their radar in some form or fashion.”

This might mean that another animated Wonder Woman movie could be in production as early as next year, just as hype continues to build from the character’s live-action outings. It’s great timing, of course, for one of the most famous superheroes of all time, and the first female comic book hero to get a solo film in the current “golden age” of the genre.

The last time Wonder Woman was featured in a solo animated film was the VOD release Wonder Woman, based somewhat on the comic arc, “Gods and Monsters” by George Perez, Greg Potter, and Len Wein. From what we can tell, it looks like her live-action solo film will be taking a few cues from that arc as well, so an animated Wonder Woman movie will likely follow from the established New 52 continuity kicked off by films like Justice League: War. Or it could be a brand new version of the character we haven’t seen before, perhaps related to DC’s current Rebirth series.

    sweet, bring it on

Now THIS is amazing news!! I can see this coming out the same year as the WW movie.

Would have to be tail end of the year at the latest, though, assuming WBA really hasn’t started yet. My money is on early 2018, especially since the panel said that a new Teen Titans should be dropping first. I don’t buy the rumors though that WBA is waiting to see how many people turn out to see WW in June. I can’t imagine them waiting almost year to start production, and they have to know that WW is going to draw in a huge crowd.

      • SAMURAI36

Yeah, my money is on them having already started, at least in the pre-production stages of WW. WBA is pretty consistent about doing at least 3-4 films a year (rumors have been floating around as of late, that they want to up the production to 5 or 6), and so if they are hinting at it now, then it’s definitely in the works.

Oh yeah, I’d totally forgotten about the TT animated!! That should be fun.

I’m needing to see Martian Manhunter in the new DC animated uinverse, though.

BTW, where is that article pic of WW from? I’ve been trying to place it….

        • Invincibillie

from the 2009 WW animated movie

Oh that’s right, at the end, from the Cheetah fight scene. Thanx!

Brian Azzarello’s New 52 Wonder Woman has a great story that can be put on screen.

    • Brodie Marschall

Wow…. Hope that Wonder Woman animated movie takes place in the DC Animated Movie Universe.

The 2009 Wonder Woman movie is fantastic. They should just make a sequel to that. The recent New 52 DCAU movies have been pretty bad. Since DC has dropped the New 52 they should drop the New 52 Animated Movies and just do standalones like they use to.
