2017 is so far shaping up to be the year of Wonder Woman. She’ll be appearing in her own DCEU solo film next June, followed by a reprisal of her modern role in Justice League. There’s even a biopic about the creation of her character set to release soon as well. And it looks like Warner Bros. has more plans for her beyond the live-action films.
Warner Bros. Animation has featured a New 52 take on Wonder Woman in several of their animated Justice League movies over the past few years, but the Amazonian hasn’t been featured in a solo Wonder Woman movie for quite some time. Today at New York Comic Con, however, supervising producer James Tucker teased fans about such a project likely coming in the near future, just after a preview of the upcoming animated Justice League Dark movie.
“We discussed with Warner video, and they have ‘Wonder Woman’ on their radar in some form or fashion.”
This might mean that another animated Wonder Woman movie could be in production as early as next year, just as hype continues to build from the character’s live-action outings. It’s great timing, of course, for one of the most famous superheroes of all time, and the first female comic book hero to get a solo film in the current “golden age” of the genre.
The last time Wonder Woman was featured in a solo animated film was the VOD release Wonder Woman, based somewhat on the comic arc, “Gods and Monsters” by George Perez, Greg Potter, and Len Wein. From what we can tell, it looks like her live-action solo film will be taking a few cues from that arc as well, so an animated Wonder Woman movie will likely follow from the established New 52 continuity kicked off by films like Justice League: War. Or it could be a brand new version of the character we haven’t seen before, perhaps related to DC’s current Rebirth series.
