During an interview with Digital Spy, X-Men film series producer Simon Kinberg revealed the reason behind the latest release date delay for The New Mutants.
Earlier this month, Walt Disney Studios announced the release date for Fox’s The New Mutants was being pushed back to April 2020, nearly two years after the X-Men film was originally planned to hit theaters. While fans speculated on the reason for the delay, long-time X-Men film series producer Simon Kinberg explained the reason for pushing back the release date was to grant production the time required to schedule and film reshoots:
“What’s happening is we’re gonna do reshoots this year on that film and it has a new release date from Disney. That’s really it. Part of it was figuring out what the reshoots were gonna be, the pick-ups, and the other part of it was getting that cast back together.”
Simon Kinberg added that while the cast may be relatively smaller with few big names than most X-Men films, many of the New Mutants stars are committed to television projects that makes it difficult to assemble all of them at once:
“It would seem simple on The New Mutants because they maybe not as big movie stars as the main X-Men movies, but all of them are on TV shows, so we’ve got to wait until they get off their shows and they can all be in the same place at the same time. So that will be some time this year, we’ll do our pick-ups and the movie will come out.”
Based on the Marvel Comics team of the same name, the upcoming X-Men film centers on five young mutants who are just discovering their abilities while being held in a secret facility against their will.
Directed by Josh Boone from a script co-written by Knate Lee, The New Mutants stars Anya Taylor-Joy as Illyana Rasputin / Magik, Maisie Williams as Rahne Sinclair / Wolfsbane, Charlie Heaton as Sam Guthrie / Cannonball, Henry Zaga as Roberto da Costa / Sunspot, Blu Hunt as Danielle Moonstar / Mirage, and Alice Braga as Cecilia Reyes.
The New Mutants is scheduled to be released in theaters on April 3rd, 2020.
