‘Star Wars’: Next Movie And Director To Be Announced In January

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy reportedly plans to announce a new Star Wars film and director in January 2020.

With Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker set to conclude the nine-film story the titular family that has been the primary focus of the feature films so far, the future of the franchise remains unknown to fans aside from the fact that it will focus on new stories and characters. After Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is released, Disney and Lucasfilm plan to put the feature film franchise on hiatus as the studios map out the future.

Now, The Hollywood Reporter sources say Kathleen Kennedy has a director line-up for a new Star Wars film slated for released in 2022, with an announcement planned for January. Additional details on the Star Wars movie were not divulged aside from the fact that it will not be the one The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson is developing.

Here is the official synopsis for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker:

Lucasfilm and director J.J. Abrams join forces once again to take viewers on an epic journey to a galaxy far, far away with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the riveting conclusion of the seminal Skywalker saga, where new legends will be born and the final battle for freedom is yet to come.

 Directed by J. J. Abrams, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker stars Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, Billie Lourd, Naomi Ackie, Richard E. Grant, Keri Russell, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Ian McDiarmid, and Billy Dee Williams. Carrie Fisher will appear as General Leia Organa through the use of previously unreleased footage shot for Star Wars: The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will be released in theaters on December 19, 2019.
