Is Man of Tomorrow taking Lex Luthor in a whole new direction? Nicholas Hoult reveals his excitement to return to the world of Superman in the upcoming sequel.
Nicholas Hoult gave a truly generational performance as Lex Luthor in Superman. His performance both held a lot of nuance and showed how simple a character like Lex Luthor can truly be at his core. This has left many excited for how the character will continue to evolve in the DC Universe, as the next film on his docket is the pseudo-sequel of Man of Tomorrow.
With the script for Man of Tomorrow confirmed to be locked, fans have been trying to squeeze any details they can out of those involved- including Nicholas Hoult. The actor was actually asked about the upcoming sequel in an interview with GQ. While he admits he hasn’t read the script for the Superman follow-up, he does say he’s excited to play Lex Luthor once more.
“I haven’t read it yet, but hopefully will soon, so I can’t say anything more than that. But just upon playing the character for the first time in that story, through my research and prep, I feel like there’s a lot more for me to explore and for us to explore. So I’m excited that we are getting the chance to go back and do that.”
Nicholas Hoult’s Hopes For Lex Luthor
Yet it seems as though Nicholas Hoult isn’t going into the Man Of Tomorrow script completely blind. The actor reveals that he hasn’t spoken to James Gunn about the general direction of the sequel. And while he doesn’t say much, he does tease that Lex Luthor may be taking a very different path than he did in Superman.
“Also, I loved working with James Gunn. I think he’s a wonderful director and creative person and mind. I just spoke to him a week or two ago about the sequel and his idea for that. So I’m really excited to play that character again because I feel like there’s a lot to explore with him and expectations to subvert. It’s going to be exciting to step back into those shoes again.”
Given Lex Luthor is set to be one of the protagonists of Man of Tomorrow, it’s likely that the character will have a much more nuanced sense of justice than was shown in Superman. Though, with the sequel filming midway through next year, it’s likely details about the project will be coming out sooner rather than later.
