The Walking Dead‘s Norman Reedus has discussed Melissa McBride’s exit from the planned Daryl & Carol spin-off, saying she deserves the break but still thinks the characters will reunite.

Melissa McBride plays Carol Peletier in The Walking Dead and was due to co-star in a spin-off with Norman Reedus, who appears as Daryl Dixon in the series. The two are the only original Walking Dead cast members still appearing in the AMC series, which is set to conclude with the final part of its final season later this year. However, it was recently announced that McBride would be exiting the spin-off due to logistical difficulties associated with plans to shoot in Europe.

Appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Norman Reedus opened up about Melissa McBride’s exit from the series from his perspective, saying he thinks the actress has earned a rest after enduring The Walking Dead‘s “grueling schedule” for the past 12 years. He explained:

“She’s taking time off. Twelve years is a grueling schedule and she wanted to take some time off, so she’s doing that. And she deserves it.”

Reedus then added that he doesn’t think this is the end of Daryl’s and Carol’s time together, nor does he think they will be the only Walking Dead characters reuniting in future, saying:

“I imagine those characters are going to meet back up, at some point. And they might even meet up with some other characters down the road… But, you know, she’s taking time off and in the meantime, they were like ‘Hey, you want to go spinon a mission?’ And I was like ‘Yeah!'”

It sounds like Melissa McBride’s exit from the Daryl & Carol spin-off is unlikely to be the end for her time in the Walking Dead universe and fans can look forward to more adventures to come for her, Norman Reedus’ Daryl and other characters from the series.

The final part of The Walking Dead‘s final season is due to air later this year.
