Paul Bettany Teases His MCU Return As The Vision

The Vision will (probably) return!

Avengers and WandaVision actor Paul Bettany has teased his eventual return to the MCU as the Vision – even if he doesn’t know when it will be.

In a recent interview with Variety, the Marvel actor was asked about returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the role he first played in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Paul Bettany has been a part of the MCU since its very beginning in 2008’s Iron Man, in which he voiced JARVIS, the AI system used by Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark. In Age of Ultron his role would be evolved into that of the synthezoid known as the Vision, who would ultimately meet his demise at the hand of Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. However, two new versions of the character appeared in the Disney Plus series WandaVision – one a white, colorless reconstruction of the original, the other a memory given life by Wanda Maximoff’s magical abilities.

WandaVision ended with Wanda’s conjured Vision restoring the memories of his original, mind-wiped counterpart. White Vision then took to the skies, flying away and not showing up again in the MCU since. Many fans have theorized Paul Bettany may return to the role in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which also sees the return of Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda and will follow on from the events of WandaVision. While Bettany has refused to confirm whether he is involved in the film, he has now revealed he will likely return to the MCU in order to tie up the “loose end” left by his most recent appearance. The actor said:

“No, the honest answer to that is – well maybe it’s not the honest answer, but it’s the answer I’m going to give you and you’ll just have to cope with it – at the end of WandaVision, you see Vision fly off and that’s a loose end … And Kevin Feige (president of Marvel Studios) is a man who doesn’t really allow loose ends. So I assume at some point I will be putting on my tights and cloak for another outing, but I don’t know when that might be.”

Whether Bettany can be believed about not knowing when he will return is a matter for fans to debate – at least until Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hits theaters next month. However, hearing the actor confirm that he will most likely be back in the MCU at some point to pick up where WandaVision left off will be welcome news to many Vision fans.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is Marvel Studios’ next theatrical release and it will see the return of characters who last appeared alongside Paul Bettany in WandaVision. Here is the official synopsis:

The MCU unlocks the Multiverse and pushes its boundaries further than ever before. Journey into the unknown with Doctor Strange, who, with the help of mystical allies both old and new, traverses the mind-bending and dangerous alternate realities of the Multiverse to confront a mysterious new adversary.

Directed by Sam Raimi from a script written by Michael Waldron, the film stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Elizabeth Olsen, Benedict Wong, Xochitl Gomez, with Michael Stuhlbarg, Rachel McAdams, and Patrick Stewart.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hits theaters on May 6, 2022. Meanwhile, the first Season of Loki is now streaming on Disney Plus, with Season 2 currently in development.
