‘Doctor Strange 2’ Writer On How The Film Intertwines With ‘Loki’ Season 2

As expected, it's all connected!

Doctor Strange 2 Loki

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness screenwriter Michael Waldron teased how the film intertwines with Loki Season 2.

In just over two weeks, the newest theatrical entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is set to release in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The film, which will be the second standalone film for Benedict Cumberbatch’s Stephen Strange and his sixth overall appearance in the MCU is looking to bring him in perhaps the most perilous adventure any Avenger has embarked on in a solo film. Given the events that transpired from WandaVision, Loki, and Spider-Man: No Way Home, things are only going to get more out of hand for the MCU, especially with a Season 2 of the series centered on Tom Hiddleston’s God of Mischief on the way.

Michael Waldron, who served as the headwriter for Loki and wrote the script for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness teased that given his involvement with both projects, as well as the unleashing of the Multiverse seen in the first season finale, the events of the film and Season 2 may be intertwined. He tells The Playlist:

“The headaches I have are probably intertwined. I mean, it’s all intertwined and it’s all stands alone. Like a great comic universe, I think that one thing certainly informs the other. You’re going to have a better time watching the next chapter of an MCU story if you’ve seen the stuff before it. But also, hopefully, even if you’ve never if you’ve walked in off the street, you’ll still have a blast. It should be good enough that it stands on its own.”

Michael Waldron’s comments are indicative of the creative mantra for the MCU. Although the franchise is most-recognized for its interconnected universe from film-to-film (and now series-to-series), each individual creative team involved with each chapter aims to make sure that they work as a standalone story along with fitting with the rest of the continuity. It just so happens that he is involved with both Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Loki, which makes things likely to tie-in through multiple different facets.

Here is the synopsis for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness:

The MCU unlocks the Multiverse and pushes its boundaries further than ever before. Journey into the unknown with Doctor Strange, who, with the help of mystical allies both old and new, traverses the mind-bending and dangerous alternate realities of the Multiverse to confront a mysterious new adversary.

Directed by Sam Raimi from a script written by Michael Waldron, the film stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Elizabeth Olsen, Benedict Wong, Xochitl Gomez, with Michael Stuhlbarg, Rachel McAdams, and Patrick Stewart.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hits theaters on May 6, 2022. Meanwhile, the first Season of Loki is now streaming on Disney Plus, with Season 2 currently in development.
