Original Mystique actress Rebecca Romijn has talked about the possibility of returning to the X-Men character in the MCU, with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness presenting the possibility.
The first full-length trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness revealed Patrick Stewart would be appearing in the film alongside Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange, presumably reprising his role of Charles Xavier from the X-Men films. While Stewart’s role has not been officially confirmed, the film’s multiverse-focused plot would suggest this is the case, especially after Spider-Man: No Way Home saw both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield return as their versions of Spider-Man. This has opened the door to other potential X-Men cast members, such as Rebecca Romijn, returning.
Rebecca Romijn played Mystique throughout the original X-Men trilogy and appeared for a brief cameo as one of the character’s many guises in the 2011 prequel, X-Men: First Class. In X-Men: The Last Stand, Romijn’s Mystique was shown being “cured” of her mutant powers, rendering her a regular human, which may jeopardise her odds of returning to the role. However, the multiverse presents the possibility for multiple variants of the same character to exist. When asked about a potential return as Mystique in a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Romijn said:
“I don’t know if they would ever want me back … I mean, that was quite a few years back when I played that character, but I would love to, yeah, absolutely. It was a fantastic franchise to be a part of. I’ll love that cast until the day I die. We had a great time together. And yeah, I would absolutely be open to that.”
The role of Mystique was ultimately taken over by Jennifer Lawrence in the X-Men prequel series, so there is also a chance Marvel may want to introduce this version of the character into the MCU. However, thanks to the multiverse, this wouldn’t necessarily prevent original Mystique Rebecca Romijn returning as well.
