James Spader is set to reprise his role as the villainous Ultron in Paul Bettany’s upcoming Vision series from Marvel Studios, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Spader’s return marks the revival of one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most iconic villains, who last appeared in 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron and the animated series What If…? on Disney Plus.

Marvel has enlisted Terry Matalas, known for his work on Star Trek: Picard, to serve as showrunner for the new, yet-to-be-titled Disney+ series. Paul Bettany is returning as The Vision after the character was last seen in the finale of Marvel’s Disney Plus series WandaVision.

What to expect from Marvel’s Vision series

The Vision series will follow the events of WandaVision, where Vision was resurrected twice — first through Wanda Maximoff’s grief-driven magic and then as a reassembled, emotionless synthezoid with no memory of his past life. Plot details are being kept under lock and key.

Matalas’s appointment as showrunner came after his work on Star Trek: Picard Season 3 impressed Marvel executives, including Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige. Feige, a longtime Star Trek fan, was reportedly enthusiastic about Matalas’s ability to handle complex character arcs and reunite beloved characters in meaningful ways.

An earlier version of the Vision series was in development under WandaVision creator Jac Schaeffer, but Schaeffer shifted her focus to another WandaVision spinoff, Agatha All Along, starring Kathryn Hahn. Agatha All Along premieres on Dinsey Plus this September.
