Paul Feig stated that he hopes his Ghostbusters film can co-exist with Jason Reitman’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife.
In 2016, Sony rebooted the Ghostbusters film series with a new movie featuring an all-female cast and director Paul Feig at the helm. While the new Ghostbusters film received undue backlash from a vocal group of sexist trolls, the Paul Feig reboot also earned fans who would love to see the talented cast of women reprise their roles.
However, Sony has instead opted to move forward with a direct sequel to the original Ghostbusters films subtitled Afterlife from writer and director Jason Reitman, the son of the man who helmed the first two installments of the franchise, Ivan Reitman. Nonetheless, Paul Feige stated that he hopes his Ghostbusters film and Jason Reitman’s Afterlife can co-exist during an interview with Slash Film at the Television Critics Association tour:
“What’s so great, in the comic book world, they’ve done a lot of crossover ones where there’s like an interdimensional rip and our team joins up with the original Ghostbusters. So the fact that that’s already been laid and made comic book canon, anything could happen so who knows. I would love to see that team come back. We had so much fun making that movie, for whatever controversy it caused. The fact that so many kids love that, that we won the Nickelodeon Best Movie of the Year Award that year makes me very happy.”
