Is Peacemaker already breaking the DC Universe? James Gunn clarifies his approach to canon when it comes to the upcoming reboot.
Ever since it was revealed that Peacemaker season 2 would be canon to the DC Universe, fans have been left scratching their head about how James Gunn plans to connect two completely disparate universes without doing a complete reboot of the series. This has led many to worry that this new era is bound to fail by way of keeping any ties to the old continuity, no matter how small.
Luckily, it seems as though James Gunn has a clear plan for Peacemaker. When speaking about the DC Universe’s canon in a recent interviewer, Gunn revealed that the events of season 1 will be directly addressed in future projects. The only part that he’ll need to reckon with heading into season 2 is the small Justice League cameo that closed out the series’ freshman showing.
“In Creature Commandos, you’ll hear them talk about things that happened in [The] Suicide Squad or Peacemaker,” Gunn told IGN in a recent chat. “Well then, those things automatically become canon. The truth is almost all of Peacemaker is canon with the exception of Justice League. Which we will kind of deal with in the next season of Peacemaker.”
How Peacemaker Season 2 Will Address The Justice League
The explanation that the events of Peacemaker season 1 happened in both the old and new DC Universe is one that’s easy to square with fans. However, given casual viewers physically saw the Justice League in the finale, there remains a worry of how James Gunn will address their appearance heading into season 2.
The most prevailing theory is that Peacemaker season 2 will hitch its cart to the multiverse horse the industry has been riding the past few years. Specifically, the cast of season 1 is predicted to somehow make the jump into the new DC Universe in season 2. Meaning that Peacemaker can keep the same canon from the perspective of the characters, while still allowing James Gunn to selectively make other things canon.
