The first photo from HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us video game reveals Pedro Pascal’s Joel and Bella Ramsey’s Ellie.
After a long-gestating cinematic adaptation that failed to hit production, an adaptation of the award-winning The Last of Us series was set to go ahead at HBO in 2020. The Last of Us’ writer and director Neil Druckman was brought on board alongside Chernobyl scribe Craig Mazin to develop the series for HBO. After months of pre-production, the series has officially started filming in Canada, with The Mandalorian‘s Pedro Pascal and Game of Thrones‘ Bella Ramsey tapped to play the main leads.
The first image from the series shows the back of Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey looking at the wreckage of a plane crash. Fans of the video game series will note that Ellie and Joel in the image are rocking the same clothes from the video game. While we don’t see the character’s faces, it’s clear that HBO has nailed the vibe from the first The Last of Us.
The Last of Us was developed by Naughty Dog and debuted on the PlayStation 3 in 2013 to critical and commercial acclaim, quickly becoming one of PlayStation’s premier franchises. Seven long years later, Naughty Dog dropped The Last of Us Part II for the PlayStation 4, which was a commercial success, but received mixed to polarizing reviews from fans. The HBO series is expected to adapt to the first game only.
The original video game centers on the relationship between a smuggler named Joel and 14-year-old Ellie, the latter of whom may be the key to curing the deadly pandemic that resulted in the post-apocalypse world of the game. Hired to smuggle Ellie out of a quarantine zone, Joel finds himself relying on the teenage girl just as much as she relies on him as they fight to survive on their journey across the United States. The HBO adaptation will cover the events of the first game, with the second game potentially surviving as the basis for additional content. The upcoming series is said to be one of the most expensive ever made, with each episode said to cost roughly $10M with a total budget of around $200M.
HBO’s The Last Of Us currently does not have a release date but is reportedly planned to be released in late 2022.
