Does the DC Universe have its perfect Plastic Man? Rainn Wilson reveals that he’s spoken to James Gunn about taking on the franchise’s most flexible hero.
There’s been a lot of speculation about what characters may appear in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s reboot of the DC Universe. However, one character that seems to be a foregone conclusion in many fans’ minds is Plastic Man. Not only did Superman introduce half of his most recent team in The Terrifics, but fans have already hand-picked the character’s casting with Ben Schwartz.
However, a new contender has now thrown his hat into the ring to play the DC Universe’s Plastic Man. Rainn Wilson, best known for his portrayal of Dwight Schrute on The Office, recently revealed that he wants to play Eel O’Brien on the silver screen. And it seems he’s already talked to James Gunn about the possibility.
“I’ve hinted to James several times, like, ‘Hey man, you’ve got to do something with Plastic Man.’ He’s one of my favorite DC characters, and I loved him growing up,’ Wilson explained at Fan Expo Chicago (via Entertainment Weekly). “He had a wicked sense of humor. The Plastic Man comics were very, very funny. That would be a fun one to unearth. I would be a fan even if I wasn’t in it. I would love to watch that. And play him.”
Is Rainn Wilson Playing Plastic Man?
James Gunn and Rainn Wilson have worked together before. Wilson actually starred in Gunn’s first superhero film, aptly titled Super, all the way back in 2010. Given Gunn’s proclivity to cast his old friends in his new projects, it wouldn’t be shocking to see Wilson make his way to the DC Universe, be it as Plastic Man or some other hero.
However, if there were any plans for James Gunn to bring Rainn Wilson on as Plastic Man, it’s not likely Wilson would have made such a public comment about the possibility. Though, with Plastic Man likely coming to the DC Universe sooner than later, it may be possible for Wilson to serve as a producer for the film to help bring it to life.
