Rian Johnson has reflected on the experience of making Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi, saying he was able to put everything he wanted into his Star Wars movie.

The Last Jedi has proved divisive in the Star Wars fandom to say the least. While a certain section of the audience hold up the film as near perfect, many others have decried it as one of Disney’s worst additions to the Star Wars saga.

Rian Johnson has lately made it clear that he has no regrets over his approach to The Last Jedi and recently spoke about the creative freedom he enjoyed in the making of the movie.

Rian Johnson’s Star Wars Experience

Speaking to Gizmodo in a recent interview, Rian Johnson said he felt satisfied that he got to put everything he would want to see in a Star Wars movie into The Last Jedi.

The Star Wars director spoke about working with Lucasfilm and Kathleen Kennedy, who he says supported and defended the creative process that allowed him to make the film he wanted to make. Johnson was very clear that he had no regrets over the direction he took The Last Jedi.

Speaking about his Star Wars film, Rian Johnson said:

“That’s one thing I can say, is that I put everything into a Star Wars movie that I could possibly want in a Star Wars movie. I think ultimately that’s what defines the experience for me looking back on it and why I feel just so thankful for it and good about it.

“I feel like, for better or for worse, when I had my chance at the plate, I swung. I was very lucky to get to do [that and work with] the people at Disney and Lucasfilm and Kathleen Kennedy, who protect the creative process so that I could really go in and I could really do what I wanted. That’s one thing I don’t feel any regrets about or anything like that.

“I feel like I did absolutely leave it on the table. But I also feel like a filmmaker should do that with every single movie they ever make. You know, I feel like if you get to the end of the process and feel like you’ve still got something in the tank for the sequel, you’ve done the process wrong, I think.”

Rian Johnson may have to find something else in the tank for another Star Wars movie, as the director is currently set to return to Lucasfilm to helm a new trilogy for the franchise. In the meantime, his Knives Out sequel Glass Onion is set to release in select theaters and on Netflix later this year.

The next Star Wars project from Lucasfilm will be Andor on Disney Plus. Here’s the synopsis:

“The ‘Andor’ series will explore a new perspective from the Star Wars galaxy, focusing on Cassian Andor’s journey to discover the difference he can make. The series brings forward the tale of the burgeoning rebellion against the Empire and how people and planets became involved. It’s an era filled with danger, deception and intrigue where Cassian will embark on the path that is destined to turn him into a rebel hero.”

Andor stars Diego Luna, Stellan Skarsgård, Adria Arjona, Fiona Shaw, Denise Gough, Kyle Soller, and Genevieve O’Reilly. Tony Gilroy, Dan Gilroy, Stephen Schiff, and Beau Willimon served as the writers of the Star Wars series while Toby Haynes, Susanna White, and Benjamin Caron directed the episodes.
