The MCU may not be done with the Eternals quite yet! A new rumor suggests that Marvel may be eyeing Richard Madden to make a return as Ikaris.
Eternals was one of the most star-studded casts that the MCU has ever seen. Nearly every member of Marvel’s team of ancient aliens was either a critically acclaimed or fan-favorite actor. However, perhaps none of them were poised to gain more from the film than Richard Madden. Coming off a legendary run as Robb Stark on Game of Thrones, many viewed his role as Ikaris to be the make-or-break moment for him as a leading man.
Sadly, Eternals ended up being both a critical and box office disappointment for Marvel, being one of the earliest signs that the MCU may be in for trouble with post-COVID audiences. Aside from a few brief animated cameos, the cast of the film has been left high and dry. Even outside of the franchise, Richard Madden has only starred in two projects since his debut as Ikaris.
Will Ikaris Return In The MCU?
Luckily for Eternals fans, it seems as though Marvel isn’t completely through with the characters. A rumor from MyTimeToShineHello reveals that Richard Madden will be “back for more” as Ikaris. While the scooper declined to reveal any specifics about how the character may return after flying into the sun, it likely has to do with following up the film’s ill-fated post-credits scene.
There’s long been a rumor that Marvel has plans to adapt the Judgement Day comic in the MCU: an event featuring the Eternals, X-Men, and Avengers- and which Ikaris has a large part to play. This would be the most likely circumstance for Richard Madden to return, especially as it would mean the film’s box office isn’t solely relying on characters who have failed to prove themselves with audiences.
