Rob Liefeld recently discussed The New Mutants‘ delays and how the film was praised in a test screening back in 2017.
It’s been quite the long and tumultuous road for The New Mutants with no practical end in sight. Originally set for release in 2018, the film was delayed numerous times due to reshoots to make it more frightening, with Disney’s acquisition of Fox further complicating the project’s release. The film was finally set to hit theaters last month but that didn’t prove possible due to the COVID-19 pandemic that has shuttered the entire industry. The New Mutants’ release has been extremely frustrating but Rob Liefeld has assured fans that the film has received considerable amounts of praise.
In a recent interview with Inverse, Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld discussed The New Mutants‘ numerous delays but also revealed that the film received glowing responses from those in attendance at a test screening.
“That New Mutants movie was shot before Deadpool 2. Next week is two years since Deadpool 2 came out. New Mutants was shot before, and I don’t know what the hell happened, dude. Now it’s on Amazon for pre-order? Just give it to us. Here’s the truth: my friends saw a test screening, and I couldn’t attend that day. I would have been able to sneak in. They loved it. Here’s what I know: all my friends who saw New Mutants in December of 2017 loved it. They loved it. They were describing it to me, they said a couple of special effects weren’t done, but they loved it. Then it got taken off the schedule, and then Disney happened, but I hear it’s great. Here’s the deal: do you really want to go back and sit in the theater? I’m a giant movie nerd, and it’s gonna be a long time. I do not miss it… I’m not going to a theater where you can sneeze on me. I think we’ve all gotten a little agoraphobic.”
When Rob Liefeld puts it like that, it’s pretty astounding that the film still hasn’t come out! The New Mutants trailers have received tons of praise and while it was never going to be a huge success like Deadpool 2, it still would turned some head and made a decent amount of money for Fox. Also, it should be noted that The New Mutants will still be heading to cinemas, despite the Amazon pre-order blunder from earlier this week, which was said to be a mistake.
What are your thoughts on Rob Liefeld’s comments? Are you excited for The New Mutants?
