Brand new photos from The New Mutants show off the terrifying villains the Demon Bear and The Smily Men.

While plot details on the film have been relatively tight, it’s been known that Demon Bear will be one of the X-Men project’s key villains. It turns out the Smiley Men will also be joining to film to terrorize the cast of The New Mutants. Cinefex magazine recently published two frightening stills from The New Mutants, giving us a better look at Demon Bear and introducing us to the Smiley Men. The first image sees Illyana, played by Anya Taylor-Joy, confronting the Demon Bear in Limbo. The second image introduces us to terrifying Smiley Men, who have razor sharp teeth and no eyes.

You can check out the photos below.

These images do a fantastic job of reminding us of the horror-centric and fantastical roots that The New Mutants carries with it. While the Smiley Men really do look like the work of nightmares, it’s the Demon Bear that has us genuinely excited for the film. The Demon Bear’s phantasmagorical appearance, with his fur almost mimicking the clouds, looks great and we can’t wait to see the beast take on the team.

One of the most anticipated movies of the year, The New Mutants is an X-Men spin-off that has been vying for theatrical release for nearly two years. Originally set up at Fox, The New Mutants was intended to be a horror take on the X-Men universe, with the first trailer exciting fans with its potential. Then, there were rumors of reshoots and studio meddling, which led the film to go on pause. Soon after, Disney purchased the studio, putting The New Mutants back on the release calendar for April 3… until COVID-19 hit, which caused all cinemas to shutter their doors. Fans have been pushing for a digital release either on Hulu or Disney Plus but Disney doesn’t seem to be budging like it did with Artemis Fowl. Now, there’s no telling when the Josh Boone-directed film will see the light of day.
