Robert Downey Jr.’s latest film, Dolittle is releasing on Digital tomorrow, on March 24th.
Robert Downey Jr.’s Dolittle is a film that will perhaps be best known more for its behind the scenes drama than anything else. The release date for the film was pushed back several times, underwent extensive rewrites and reshoots following poor test screenings and was reportedly a nightmare to work on. The end result, unfortunately, did not fare as well as some might have hoped.
Oddly enough, this is not the first film featuring Doctor Dolittle to suffer such a fate. The first adaptation of the property, the 1967 film, Doctor Dolittle had a notorious series of production problems that resulted in the budget being increased by three times its original amount. This ultimately contributed to the film flopping at the box office and receiving mixed to negative reviews from critics. At the time the movie killed film tie-in merchandising and is cited as one of the films that ended roadshow style theatrical releases. Robert Downey Jr.’s Dolittle also sadly suffered a similar fate.
Dolittle was not the gracious film for Robert Downey Jr. to star in after ending his run as Iron Man in Avengers: Endgame. During its theatrical run, the movie would only gross over $227M on a $175M budget. The film was not well received by critics either and only holds a 14% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Universal, however, is still pushing the film’s home release which has come up sooner than most people probably realized.
On Dolittle‘s official Twitter account, it was announced that the film would be available on digital on March 24th:
