Director Ron Howard has confirmed that, despite ongoing rumors, a sequel to Solo: A Star Wars Story is currently not in development.
Solo: A Star Wars Story was one of Disney owned Lucasfilm’s less successful stories. The film had several production issues that lead to the film’s original director’s being replaced by Ron Howard who had to reshoot much of the film, bumping up its budget to around $270M. While the film garnered mostly positive reviews, it was considered to be a box office bomb, only grossing $392M worldwide.
Fans, however, have come to enjoy Solo: A Star Wars Story and rumors began to spring up that a sequel was in development. It is unclear, however, if this sequel was going to be a Disney+ series or a theatrical release. Director Ron Howard has sadly put the breaks on these rumors.
While appearing on Radio Andy on SiriusXM, Ron Howard revealed that there is currently no sequel in development of any kind:
“Well, there’s no sequel planned now and it’s amazing to be a part of a Star Wars movie that seems to be a kind of underground hit, which is not what you’d expect, but that’s been an odd, strange journey for that movie.”
