When the 2004 superhero film Hellboy was released in theatres, viewers fell in love with the portrayal of the character by Ron Perlman. Many audiences around the world felt as if he was the definitive Hellboy, similar to how many people can only see Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, and nobody else. Perlman went on to reprise his iconic role four years later with the 2008 sequel Hellboy II: The Golden Army. However, a third film starring him never came to be a reality. Next year, Stranger Things actor David Harbour will portray the character in a reboot.
Speaking to ComicBook.com, Ron Perlman shared his thoughts on whether or not he would portray another superhero character down the road.
Well, I’m not much of a comic book dude, so I don’t know who’s really out there. I didn’t find Hellboy, Guillermo [del Toro] found Hellboy and Guillermo just introduced Hellboy to me and infused me with his boyish fanboy obsession with the character. That’s what got me through that one. No, there’s no comic book character that I have identified that I’m dying to play. Plus, I don’t know if, at 68, I should even be educating the notion of superheroes anymore.
Fans may be upset with this news, as Ron Perlman is considered to be one of the best actors in the comic book movie industry. He still makes plenty of films, but if fans of his are looking for a new superhero portrayal, they should lower their hopes.
Hellboy will be released in theatres on April 12, 2019, by Lionsgate in the United States, and VVS Films in Canada.
Directed by Neil Marshall with a script from Mike Mignola, Andrew Cosby, Christopher Golden, and Aron Coleite, Hellboy stars David Harbour, Milla Jovovich, Ian McShane, Sasha Lane, and Daniel Dae Kim.
