When you think about franchises, television shows, or films having the rug pulled from under them in the middle of their story, there are a few noteworthy examples that come to mind. Think The Amazing Spider-Man 2, for example, with a new status quo and a setup for the Sinister Six down the line. But for today, this is about Hellboy. More specifically Ron Perlman’s Hellboy films and how it appears there will never be closure on where The Golden Army ended.
Now, the franchise is set to be rebooted with David Harbour taking on the titular role in a film next year, but the plan was always for director Guillermo del Toro to complete his trilogy, especially with the second film’s ending of Liz revealing that she’s pregnant with twins. And now that plot line and particular set of films has been long abandoned and while everyone involved with those films has moved on since then, it’s still a sore subject for main star Ron Perlman, who recently spoke with Collider Live about his experience with those films.
You see, Ron Perlman revealed that in his prior attempts to get a third Hellboy off the ground so Guillermo del Toro could properly finish his trilogy, there were too many people moving in many different directions to make the project possible, even though he felt the third installment was owed to the fans. While Perlman wishes well for everyone involved with the reboot, it’s still an “open wound” for him to talk about the past Hellboy films, given his attempts to make the third one a reality.
You can watch Ron Perlman discuss his time with the Hellboy films in the video below.
In addition, Perlman got hopes high when he revealed that if you were a fan of the previous two Hellboy projects, you were no doubt going to love this new one because the series was always intended to be a true trilogy. Unfortunately, we can only imagine what could have been as we prepare to take on a new Hellboy film.
What did you think of the previous two Hellboy films? And would you have wanted to see a conclusion to the storyline? Let us know in the comments below.
In the meantime, the new Hellboy film, starring David Harbour in the title role, will hit theaters on April 12, 2019.
