Ryan Gosling’s upcoming Wolfman film from Universal and Blumhouse Productions has added Derek Cianfrance as director.

It seemed like it has been over an eternity since we last heard anything about Ryan Gosling’s Wolfman film from Universal and Blumhouse Productions. The film was originally revealed to be in development all the way back in May of 2020 before the news broke that The Invisible Man director Leigh Whannell was in talks to helm the film. He was eventually forced to leave the project due to scheduling conflicts.

Back in 2017, Universal took its own shot at a cinematic universe with its own classic horror movie monsters that were supposed to begin with the Tom Cruise film, The Mummy. After the film’s underwhelming box-office performance the studio opted to rethink the way it approached these franchises, letting Blumhouse Productions take a crack at it. The first film to come out of this was Leigh Whannnel’s The Invisible Man film which earned over $122M worldwide on a $7M budget.

Soon after, Blumhouse and Universal began putting more projects into development which included Ryan Gosling’s Wolfman project and a Dracula film. According to Variety, Derek Cianfrance has been added to the film as director. Gosling and Cianfrance had previously worked together for The Place Beyond the Pines and Blue Valentine. The director is also set to write the film’s script.

In a statement, Derek Cianfrance expressed his excitement for the upcoming Wolfman project and the opportunity to work with Ryan Gosling again:

“Horror movies were my first love — my entry into what cinema was capable of narratively, psychologically and aesthetically. Coupled with the opportunity to collaborate with Ryan again, this is truly a dream come true. I’m thrilled and inspired to work with the good folks at Blumhouse and Universal to bring this monster back to life in our collective unconscious.”
