Deadpool and Wolverine pushes Marvel’s limits! Ryan Reynolds admits that he was shocked by the amount of R rated content Disney allowed in the upcoming Marvel movie.
Deadpool has always been one of Marvel’s most adult characters. This left many fans wondering how Disney would handle the character following the studio’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox. Nobody expected the answer to be “let him loose,” with Deadpool and Wolverine set to be the craziest film in the franchise. This seemed to even shock the movie’s star, Ryan Reynolds.
“I hope it doesn’t sound condescending, I’m really proud of them for doing this. I think it’s a huge step for them,” Reynolds told Fandango during a recent interview. “I mean, it adds a whole other color to this kaleidoscopic wheel that is that company and the different people that they have been entertaining forever. I was surprised though, that they let us go as hard R, but very grateful. I mean there’s no other way to do it.”
Given the premise of Deadpool and Wolverine involves the meeting of two of the most violent characters in Marvel’s catalog, it’s likely true that Ryan Reynolds couldn’t make the project without a hard R-rating. This could be the start to a whole new era of raunchy Disney films. Though, more likely, this treatment will only be reserved for billion-dollar franchises.
Are Deadpool And Wolverine Buddies?
While Deadpool and Wolverine is filled with more curses and blood than you can shake a marketable plush at, that doesn’t mean the film is without a heart. During the same interview, Hugh Jackman was asked if he and Ryan Reynolds’ Merc with a Mouth would be buddies, to which Jackman said the project is more than that.
“Just the word buddy doesn’t encapsulate all there is,” Jackman explained. “That just implies good times with two guys having the best time together.”
“We’re very liberally borrowing from some of the tones of some of the great buddy films ever made,” Reynolds added. “I mean, if you think about Planes, Trains and Automobiles the first thing you think about is that it’s a very funny movie, it’s a comedy, but it’s also like a heartbreaking movie.”
It looks as if Deadpool and Wolverine isn’t going to just be full of jokes. Both of the titular characters are tragic heroes, with Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds always bringing their A-game when it comes to bringing those sides of the characters to life. Let’s just hope Disney allowed them to have those moments without a quip immediately after to break the tension!
