Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness director Sam Raimi has discussed the ways Avengers: Endgame‘s fallout is affecting characters in the new movie.

Avengers: Endgame changed the landscape of the Marvel Cinematic Universe forever. Thanos, who had been lurking in the background ever since the first Avengers movie, was finally defeated. Tony Stark gave his life. Steve Rogers passed on the Captain America mantle. And that’s not to mention half the world’s population suddenly returning after vanishing for five years. It’s fair to assume a story of that magnitude would have a lasting impact on characters across the MCU. Now it sounds like the Sam Raimi directed Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will address some of that fallout.

In an official press release from Marvel Studios, Sam Raimi talked about the importance of the MCU’s focus on characters and their fallibility. The director spoke about how the Doctor Strange sequel will see characters questioning choices that were made in Avengers: Endgame. Movies like Spider-Man: Far From Home have already addressed some of the pain and uncertainty that followed Endgame‘s conclusion, but it sounds like Multiverse of Madness is going to dive even deeper into these ideas and maybe have characters question whether they did the right thing. Raimi said:

“Marvel Cinematic Universe fans are interested in the characters. Who are they? What could they have become? Did they make the right choices? Even in ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ choices were made that some of the characters in our movie regret. They see the repercussions of that in this film, which is really interesting. The continuance of Marvel Studios stories can be so rich, and we’re able to explore it in ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.’

Given that Doctor Strange set the Avengers on the path that saved the world, but at the cost of Tony Stark’s life, the sorcerer could be dealing with some regret over Iron Man’s fate.
