Sam Raimi Confirms ‘Doctor Strange 2’ Nearly Killed Off Chiwetel Ejiofor’s Baron Mordo

"Too many sorcerers."

Chiwetel Ejiofor Doctor Strange 2 Master Mordo

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness director Sam Raimi has revealed the film nearly killed off the MCU’s Earth-616 version of Chiwetel Ejiofor’s Baron Mordo.

Chiwetel Ejiofor first appeared in the MCU as Baron Mordo in 2016’s Doctor Strange. The character trained as a sorcerer alongside Benedict Cumberbatch’s Stephen Strange at Kamar Taj, but grew angry at the world’s sorcerers after he saw Strange bend the laws of time to defeat Dormammu. A post-credits scene saw Mordo vowing to rid the world of sorcerers and apparently that mission almost led to his demise in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Mordo Vs. The Scarlet Witch

Chiwetel Ejiofor returns in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but he is only seen as another universe’s version of Mordo – Master Mordo of Earth-838. The only mention the film makes of the version of the character who was introduced in Doctor Strange is when Strange tells America Chavez that Mordo has been trying to kill him ever since the events of that film.

Now director Sam Raimi has confirmed that Earth-616’s Baron Mordo was originally going to appear in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but was – shockingly – going to meet his demise. In his quest to rid the world of magic users, Mordo tracked down Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch, only to be beheaded by her, Raimi revealed in the film’s directors’ commentary. “She killed him and cut his head off,” the director said, also revealing that Wanda “presented [Mordo’s head] to Strange in a later scene.”

Killing off Mordo in the second Doctor Strange movie would certainly have been a bold and unexpected move. It’s hardly surprising the scene was cut, as it would have put an abrupt end to Mordo’s evil machinations, before audiences had even had a chance to see him clash with Doctor Strange.
