Sasha Calle had big plans for Supergirl! The Flash star reveals the truth about her contract for the DC Universe before being recast for the role.
The Flash was meant to be a new beginning for the DC Universe, reintroducing an old Batman to take up the mantle and a new Supergirl to take up the guard. However, as more and more projects flopped at the box office, plans were ultimately scrapped in favor of a total reboot. This included the end of Sasha Calle’s contract as the Woman of Tomorrow which, according to a recent interview, was already set to have her star in multiple films.
“I was so deeply in love with that role,” Calle reflected in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “I had a conversation about her future many times. When I signed onto that, it was for a multiple picture deal. That’s a common thing when you sign onto a franchise. So it was very heartbreaking for me, and it was very confusing. Ultimately, I know that I did my best…”
It’s unfortunate to hear that Sasha Calle felt she had such a sure future as Supergirl in the DC Universe prior to the failure of The Flash. While it does make sense for the studio to start fresh, it’s important to remember the very real toll that studio politics and cancellations have on the cast and crew of some of the world’s most beloved franchises. Luckily, it seems that Calle still has a positive outlook on her time as the iconic hero despite the turmoil.
Sasha Calle Reflects On Her Time As Supergirl
It’s hard to remember, but the internet wasn’t sure about Sasha Calle when she was first cast as Supergirl in The Flash. The first set images of her in costume were enough to light the internet on fire. However, when the film came out, many of those same fans fell in love with her nuanced performance as the character. That love for her character and audiences seeing themselves in her portrayal seems to be one of the fondest memories Calle has of her time in the DC Universe.
“I look back at it as something super beautiful. It’s been said that a queer Latina girl like me couldn’t be Supergirl. But I was, and no one can take that away from me. That is the most important thing for me; I did something that mattered. And whether you saw yourself represented in me or not, a lot of people really connected with her and loved her.”
Given her quickly her contract was cut short after The Flash bombed, a smile about what work had already been done is perhaps the best outcome for Sasha Calle’s time as Supergirl. It’s a performance that’ll certainly live on in the hearts and minds of fans as the DC Universe enters a new era. And with the power of streaming, it’s not likely that impact will go away anytime soon.
